'It felt so good to be able to have someone do my hair, and know it was going to be done properly.' -- Fran Shelton

Keratin Complex®’s professional stylists are used to inspiring their clients every day—whether it’s with a chic new haircut, a fresh new hair color, or a keratin treatment that makes the client’s daily maintenance so much easier.

But it isn’t often that a client is the one who inspires the stylist!

Meet Fran Shelton, a 75-year-old from Marysville, WA, whose hair was definitely the worse for wear after 13 (!) years of on-and-off chemotherapy treatments.

“She might be the most amazing, strong, bright, and funniest lady I have ever met,” says stylist and KC educator Rachel Chambers, who first met Fran in early March when she walked into Identity Salon in Stanwood, WA, in desperate need of a hair makeover.

“She sat in my chair and said, ‘My hair is a mess!’” Rachel recalls.

Fran, a retired mother and grandmother, has been battling colon cancer for many years. But she vowed to herself to “live every day like I didn’t have it”—and that’s exactly what she has done.

However, she did neglect her hair—for understandable reasons. Because of the hair loss from the chemotherapy, Fran wore a hat most of the time. What little hair she did have, she would color at home with a demi-permanent box color. “I just didn’t want to invest a lot of money in my hair,” she says.

But then about five months ago, her latest course of chemo ended, and her hair started coming back in. “I thought to myself, ‘Well, now it’s time to invest in getting it done right,’” Fran recalls.

A trip to a Keratin Complex salon for new hair color

Fran headed to Identity Salon and put her hair in Rachel’s expert hands. When she explained her story to Rachel, the response was simple: “We are going to make you have some beautiful hair today to match that beautiful spirit of yours!”

Fran requested a demi-permanent color in a light brown with some blonde highlights. However, because of the medication and chemo deposits in Fran’s hair, Rachel decided that she needed to use KeraHold® permanent color in order to drive enough pigment into Fran’s hair.

So, Rachel first evened out Fran’s hair with a “canvas cleanse” using It’s a Blonde Thing™ lightener, before applying a base color that was a mixture of light brown, dark golden blonde and medium mahogany violet brown. Then she foiled in alternate formulas of medium ash blonde and ultra-light violet pearl blonde for the highlights.

Because of the damage to Fran’s hair from all those chemicals, Rachel also made sure to add a Vitashot™ to each of the formulas to help strengthen and rebuild the bonds of the hair.

She finished up the service with a Red-Carpet Blow-Dry, using Keratin Complex Intense Rx® and Infusion Keratin Replenisher to help give Fran full, sleek and shiny hair.

The Color Therapy hair-color results for Fran

From the moment she sat in Rachel’s chair, Fran was in heaven. “It was such a treat to get my hair done. It felt so good to be able to have someone do it, and know it was going to be done properly,” recalls Fran, who calls Rachel “a delight.”

Besides loving the rich brown color that Rachel achieved, Fran also appreciates the technique she used to create the highlights, which help to blend the new-growth grays, allowing her to wait about seven weeks until her next appointment.

For her part, Rachel says that having Fran as a client “is a perfect example of why I do what I do. I love touching people and making them feel beautiful. She made my day as much as I hope I made hers. It’s amazing how truly beautiful people can touch your heart.”

In keeping with the optimism and spirit that so captivated Rachel, Fran is also making plans to start her own business in May as a personal coach, working with other cancer patients and survivors.

“I’m not going anywhere,” she vows. “I’m not going to leave my kids and grandkids!”
