The beauty of a Keratin Complex keratin treatment is that you can really go to town on styling your hair!

We’ve covered a broad spectrum in our series of hair-care tips, offering expert advice on how to care for gray, curly, straight and color-treated hair. This time, we’ve put together a guide on caring for hair that has received a keratin hair treatment. Here’s what to do and what not to do during your daily routine:

Immediately following a keratin treatment

In order to get the maximum results and longevity from your Keratin Complex® treatment, it’s important to follow the guidelines that vary by smoothing treatment.

First, do not let the hair get wet for 72 hours after a Natural Keratin Smoothing Treatment or Natural Keratin Smoothing Treatment for Blonde Hair, or for eight hours following an Express Blow OutTM. This means no shampooing, no swimming, no playing in a fountain … you get the picture.

To absorb excess oil from the scalp and freshen the hair, you may use Keratin Complex Volumizing Dry Shampoo Lift Powder, which is available in blonde, brunette and neutral shades.

If your hair does become wet within the allotted time after a keratin treatment—say you got caught in the rain or thrown into a pool—then blow-dry it as soon as possible and, if necessary, go over it lightly with a flat iron on low heat.

During this waiting period, you should wear your hair down and avoid hair accessories (pins, clips, bands and ponytail holders), as these can leave a dent in the hair. Also, do not use your glasses to hold the hair back.

Note that with the Keratin Complex Advanced Glycolic Smoothing System, there is no waiting time at all: You can get the hair wet immediately and use all the hair accessories you want.

When maintaining keratin-treated hair

To maintain the longevity of our smoothing treatments, shampoo as infrequently as possible. You can use our dry shampoo to keep the hair fresh between traditional shampoos.

Keratin Complex has formulated its shampoos and conditioners without sodium chloride, the number-one enemy of keratin-treated hair. So, regular use of our Keratin Care or Keratin Color Care line is the best thing to keep your hair smooth, sleek and frizz-free!

In addition, use our deep conditioners, such as Vanilla Bean or KeraWhip®, to maintain your Smoothing Therapy results.

When styling keratin-treated hair

Use of Keratin Complex’s keratin-enhanced styling products is recommended, as these aids also have been formulated with the smoothing client in mind.

When using hot tools, it’s best to take certain precautions, as heat can dry out your hair and cause roughness or frizz.

For blow-drying: Apply heat-protecting or conditioning products (such as Keratin Complex Kerabalm) and blow-dry in a downward motion (to keep the cuticle closed).

For styling with a flat or curling iron: Make sure to apply a thermal protectant, such as Thermo-Shine, before using your iron.

You can also give yourself “mini” keratin hair treatments with Infusion Keratin Replenisher or Intense Rx® Active Keratin Repair Serum to help maintain your smooth results. Simply apply product to damp hair and proceed with your regular styling routine!

When working out or going outdoors

Be aware that salt water is terrible for keratin-treated hair, and chlorine is not much better. So, before you jump in the ocean or the pool, apply a leave-in conditioner or a deep conditioner (such as Keratin Complex Vanilla Bean) to help protect your hair. And rinse as soon as possible after getting out of the water.
