As a sponsor of the 2014 Salon Today Total Salon Makeover Contest, we first reported the winner last September. Bamboo Salon in Staten Island, NY, was chosen to receive a $30,000 prize package that included products and training from Keratin Complex®.

The ecstatic owners and stylists at Bamboo knew they were about to undergo some big changes. But no one, including the mother-daughter team Caryann Concilio and Amanda Intoccia, could have foreseen the full impact of those changes on themselves and their business!

As the winner, Bamboo Salon received the full product portfolio (both retail and backbar) and extensive education and marketing support from Keratin Complex, as well as a computer salon management system from STX, and new furnishings and design consultation from Takara Belmont.

Makeover steps on the 11-year-old business began late last year, with the salon team receiving re-certification in Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy treatments, as well as training in Color Therapy™ hair color from Keratin Complex Elite Inspiration Team member Niki Galanomatis via two classes—one that provided product knowledge and basic formulation, and one that focused on artistic techniques.

“I did a hands-on class and everyone participating in creating beautiful looks for our two lovely models,” Niki told Salon Today. “It was a rewarding and exciting day.”

“Everyone was charged up and excited about the new products, new techniques, and tricks we learned in the classes,” Amanda told Salon Today. “It is easy to get stuck doing the same things day in and day out. The classes pushed the team to go outside of our comfort zones, try new things, and offer our clients a wider range of services.”

Salon makeover

At the end of January, the salon closed for about a week so that it could undergo its physical transformation. Takara Belmont designers worked within the budget by keeping the existing flooring, mirrors and layout, while revamping the front desk and shampoo area and giving the whole salon a brighter and more modern feel with sleek Bossa Nova styling chairs, light gray walls and dark wood accents.

After the renovation, Keratin Complex sent National Sales Manager Alyson Zells to New York to help the team merchandise the new retail products. “She helped sort through what was an overwhelming amount of product, broke it down into its respective groups—whether it was Blondeshell®, or Style Therapy, etc.—and helped us create a beautiful display,” reported Amanda. “It was really fun and turned out great!”

Between the fresh new packaging, the fully stocked shelves in the Keratin Complex-only section, and the superior quality of the products, “the Keratin Complex retail line is outperforming our other retail lines by almost 50 percent,” Amanda reported to Salon Today.

“The salon has been booming,” Amanda tells us. “The staff is re-energized, and this energy is pulsing through the salon floor daily! We are getting new clients daily and the response from our existing clients has been wonderful.”

While there are only a few minor things left on the makeover to-do list, Bamboo Salon is preparing for bigger things to come. They are offering the complete Keratin Complex Smoothing Menu of Services to be able to address any client, any hair type, and almost any service request. They also are planning to host special events—such as a Keratin Complex Day of Indulgence on the Saturday before Mother's Day, “to boost retail and services of Keratin Complex,” Amanda says.

Winning the Salon Today Total Makeover competition, says Amanda, “has been nothing short of a dream! It jolted us in the direction we envision ourselves going … growing as a team, as a company, and soaring to new heights. We feel incredibly blessed and thankful for having been given this opportunity. We are enjoying every minute of it and working hard to make sure this energy lasts for years and years to come!”
