Glamour and polish continue to be the overarching story for celebrities on the red carpet, and the 74th Golden Globes Awards show and its after-parties (Jan. 8 in Beverly Hills, CA) were no exception.
While worst-dressed critics were hard-pressed to find any true howlers among the stars’ outfits, we were impressed by how gorgeous the ladies looked in general.
In gowns, the major color trends of the evening were yellow, pink, and gold/metallic. Other favorite looks included delicate embellishments and skin-baring features such as plunging necklines, high hemlines and sheer fabrics. Hair and makeup, for the most part, complemented the dresses for a beautifully complete ensemble.
Here are a few of our favorite looks or trends of the evening:
Priyanka Chopra, Kerry Washington. All photos by PR Photos
Shiny hair, bold lips (and gold gowns)
The gorgeously exotic Priyanka Chopra (ABC’s Quantico) stunned all evening in a plunging gold sequined number from Ralph Lauren accessorized with a diamond necklaces from Lorraine Schwartz. Her hair was styled into ombré waves, while her lips were painted a dark berry color (a mixture of Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour in An Affair and Seduction) and her eye shadow had a touch of shimmery gold.
The simply gorgeous Kerry Washington (ABC’s Scandal, and a nominee for best actress for the TV movie Confirmation), wore a Dolce & Gabbana golden lace, capped-sleeve, ankle-length dress embellished with a black bow at the waist. Her deep-purple lips were compliments of layering Dolce & Gabbana Glam lipstick in 355 with Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Deep Plum. And her hair was worn loose in a sleek, deep side-parted ‘do.
Claire Foy, Reese Witherspoon
Side-parted updos, pink lips (and classic Hollywood style)
Claire Foy (best-actress winner for her role in Netflix’s The Crown) was fittingly regal in a shimmery pink Erdem gown, which featured a retro look via a deep V-neck, poufy sleeves, a train, and a satin sash at her trim waist. Her blonde hair was styled in an effortless updo with face-framing wisps, with diamond teardrops on her ears and nude pink on her lips.
Hollywood royalty Reese Witherspoon (a star of animated-film nominee Sing) went with her go-to color, yellow, in a strapless yellow Versace gown with a thigh-high slit up the front, accessorized with a gold floral jeweled choker necklace, and soft, simple makeup with pink glossy lips. She wore her hair in a low bun, with a sweep of deep-parted fringe on her forehead.
Mandy Moore, Caitriona Balfe
Loose waves, statement earrings (and deep Vs)
Mandy Moore, whose new hit NBC show This Is Us garnered her a supporting-actress nomination, had serious décolletage going on with her navy Naeem Khan gown, a body-skimming Grecian-style design with a sheer cape. Her middle-parted hair was styled in soft curls, and her makeup was low-key (smoky eyes and soft pink lips) so as not to compete with her oversized platinum tear-drop earrings.
As the time-traveling heroine on the Starz show Outlander, best-actress nominee Caitriona Balfe typically wears body-covering clothing from eras bygone. So, it’s no wonder she went thoroughly modern with her after-party outfit of a plunging bronze gown, free-flowing waves and chunky gold earrings (also with minimal makeup and pretty pink lips).
Viola Davis, Emily Ratajkowski
Lovely lobs, lots of bling (and canary yellow)
Fierce actress Viola Davis (a past nominee for ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder, and best-actress winner this year for her role in the film Fences) stepped out in a bright yellow figure-hugging, single-shouldered gown designed by Michael Kors. She paired it with a sleek lob, glossy lips and large diamond drop earrings.
Model, actress and It Girl Emily Ratajkowski rocked a silky yellow gown by Reem Acra that showed lots of skin and was enhanced by a silver beaded collar and tie. Her newly-shorn hair was styled into a choppy lob, and her makeup included coral lips and shimmery orange eye shadow.
